    The Experience

Inspired by history and culture, the Zanzibar Serena Hotel opened in 1997 after meticulously restoring two historic buildings: the 19th-century Extelcoms building and the 18th-century "Chinese doctor's residence." This careful preservation reflects the early 19th-century cultural influences of the Sultans of Zanzibar, allowing guests to connect with the unique "Zanzibar Style" that contributed to Stone Town's UNESCO World Heritage status. Tucked into the Zanzibar seafront amidst Stone Town's exotic sultan's palaces, Portuguese forts, ancient dhow harbors, and vibrant bazaars, the hotel offers a stunning oceanfront setting. Its interiors are adorned with Arabic and Swahili opulence, providing warm, gracious hospitality and alluring culinary journeys. The hotel comprises two historic buildings designed in traditional Swahili style, capturing the elegance of a grander era. An ambiance of relaxed sophistication permeates each of the 51 rooms and suites, featuring wood-framed louver doors that open onto private balconies with uninterrupted Indian Ocean views. Cool, white walls, high ceilings, and crisp royal blues and whites create a sense of coastal serenity and charm. Guests can savor fresh-caught seafood and extraordinary bay views at the rooftop Terrace Seafood Restaurant, ideal for unwinding after a day exploring Spice Town. Weekly authentic Swahili banquets are held poolside at Baharia Restaurant, while Masahani Bar offers signature cocktails and live performances by traditional Taarab bands.
