The Experience
Takwela Camp, opened in July 2019, offers an intimate and rare wilderness experience in the remote North Luangwa. Situated on private land at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwaleshi Rivers, the camp boasts stunning views and accommodates a maximum of eight guests in four en-suite chalets. Built with local materials and skills, and solar-powered, Takwela embodies the Remote Africa ethos of sustainable tourism. Guests can expect an exclusive safari where wildlife is gradually acclimating to human presence, promising exceptional viewing. The North Luangwa is well-managed and supported by the Frankfurt Zoological Society and local conservation projects, ensuring a pristine environment.
Access to Takwela Camp is a scenic 30-minute flight from Mwanya (Lukuzi) airstrip in South Luangwa, followed by a 45-minute game drive and a short canoe crossing. For those seeking a more adventurous arrival, a beautiful 10km morning walk from Mwaleshi Camp along the Mwaleshi River is an option. A minimum stay of three nights is recommended to fully immerse oneself in the experience.
Takwela Camp provides a unique opportunity to explore a beautiful and largely untouched area, offering incredible wildlife encounters with healthy populations of lion, hyena, elephant, buffalo, leopard, wildebeest, and wild dog, alongside the highly successful black rhino sanctuary. While the experience carries an inherent risk due to close encounters with wild animals, tried and tested safety protocols are strictly followed to ensure guest well-being.
